Catherine Black (AKA Cat Black) is an award winning Canadian-American actress, artist and filmmaker. A member of SAG-AFTRA, AEA, ACTRA, CAEA and the Alliance of Women Directors.
Catherine started acting in commercials when she was 5 years old and was picked out of a lineup of hundreds of little girls for a successful ad campaign. She has been in continuous dedication of the craft of acting ever since, studying various acting techniques, dance and classical singing in Toronto, England and Los Angeles. Catherine is also an acting instructor in Los Angeles, where she fuses her passion for acting and directing and share's it with others.
Catherine's first major role was at 16 as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet directed by Lewis Baumander in Toronto. Catherine has performed in many award winning theatre productions over the years, but is most proud of starring in Hrant Alianak's original play, Walls of Africa, which Won 9 Dora Awards. In Film/TV Catherine is best known for her role as Vanden in American Psycho, performing with Christian Bale and Reese Witherspoon, and starring with Crispin Glover in The Donner Party (Showtime). She also stars in many Indie Features and has booked countless guest starring roles, such as Odyssey 5 (SyFy), Blue Murder (Global TV/CTV), I Love Mummy (BBC) and Playing House (NBC/USA). Most recently, Catherine had a supporting role in the feature film Debt Collectors (2020) and a lead role in comedy feature, Bittersweet (2022). At the beginning of 2020, Catherine had the privilege of playing Anne Frank in And Then They Came For Me directed by Abigail Deser with MainStreet Theatre.
Catherine's surreal figurative paintings have exhibited Internationally since the late 90's. She approaches her visual art much like she would prepare for a role as an actor, each painting a character study. Most recently Catherine photographed and wrote about the journey of her large oil paintings traveling from her family farm in Fergus Ontario Canada across the Old Oregon Trail to California. This was Catherine's Westward Expansion.
Catherine's extensive practice as an actor and artist has rooted her vision in filmmaking. Known for her strong use of color and bold imagery. Catherine is a proud member of the Alliance of Women Directors. The first five directors Catherine worked with were visionary women like Mary Harron and Amy Heckerling - inspiring her to direct one day. She was lucky to shadow many talented directors early in her career, and went on to produce commercials, award winning short films and music videos. Catherine wrote and directed the 'sexy and surreal' film, De Puta Madre a Love Story that WON Best Director (London IFF), Best Lead Actress (Madrid IFF), and Best Cinematography (Columbia Gorge IFF) along with multiple Jury Awards, Special Mentions and nominations Internationally. Catherine also wrote and directed Girl Trip, a dark comedy that took home five prestigious awards and just acquired Worldwide distribution- to be announced. Most recently, Catherine was hired to direct Like Nothing Happened that premiered at the 39th Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival and WON Best Drama at 2021 Rock The Shorts Film Festival.
Catherine divides her time between Toronto and Los Angeles, creating complex female characters, and always working on various projects for both markets, as a director-writer-actress.
